  • Mon 28th Set your alarm as lectures start!

International student? You can’t actually move in before the official weekend. Every year people arrive early and end up paying for a last minute hotel, make sure your arrival slot is all confirmed first.

Getting from A to B

  • NEWS FLASH! The town centre is not really the 10 minute walk the official line says. It’s 26 minutes, and it’s uphill on the way back. Check the weather and take a good backpack before you plan your first massive food shop.
  • Bus: Route 1 loops Stag Hill, Manor Park, the station and the Friary every 15 minutes, first bus 05:45, last 23:45. Unlock your student ticket in the Stagecoach app with your @surrey.ac.uk email.
    > Got a 9am lecture from Manor Park? there are only 3 buses, so leave yourself at least a 20 minute walking buffer.
  • Trains: Make sure you use the main Guildford station, not London Road, that’s a different station, and it’s on the wrong side of town.
    > SAVE £115! Top tip, open a Santander student account and you get a free four-year 16-25 Railcard (subject to T&Cs and availability)
  • Bikes: Try out Beryl e-bikes, only £1 to unlock then 16p a minute. Make sure you lock it properly in one of the secure sheds to not get any extra cost.
  • Car: Honestly, leave it at home. Most of Guildford only issues parking permits on medical or caring grounds from this September. Unless it’s critical you have great transport alternatives, and it’s better for our planet!

Tips From a local

  • The castle grounds is really great and totally free. Open daily from 9am, check out Guildford’s own life-size Alice statue. Fun fact; Lewis Carroll lived and died here.
  • Guildford Lido, a 50 metre outdoor pool that’s been open since 1933… its heated and open all year, but check those winter temps before diving in!
  • The River Wey towpath is flat and traffic-free. It’s a really nice walk for those hectic first few days when you just need to get outside and destress.
